Zeta Operating Systems
When Be Inc. sold their soul to Palm in 2001 we witnessed the death of BeOS. Palm weren’t interested in furthering its development because the financial incentive wasn’t as alluring as their other ventures, and it was left to stagnate, neglected and unloved *aww*. That was until YellowTAB bought the rights to take the BeOS baton and breathe fresh life into the project, building on the foundations of version five of the personal edition. (more…)

What is NAT?
Network Address Translation (NAT) provides a way to hide the IP addresses of a private network from the Internet while still allowing computers on that network to access the Internet. NAT can be used in many different ways, but one method frequently used by home users is called “masquerading”. Using NAT masquerading, one or more devices on a LAN can be made to appear as a single IP address to the outside Internet. This allows for multiple computers in a home network to use a single cable modem or DSL connection without requiring the ISP to provide more than one IP address to the user. Using this method, the ISP-assigned IP address can be either static or dynamic. Most network firewalls support NAT masquerading.

My furniture shopping.
I’d feel embarrassed to admit this if I didn’t suspect that I’m not alone. Before today, I’d never really been furniture shopping. I mean, not really, and I’m nearly thirty. I bought a cheap sofa once from Goodwill or some such place. I’ve bought furniture from people I knew, secondhand. Some of that was good stuff actually, and certainly a bargain. (more…)

World Wide Developers Conference
Yesterday, the WWDC (World Wide Developers Conference) started. Steve Jobs at his keynote introduced Mac OS X Tiger v. 10.4, which will be available in the first half of 2005. TIger is what I am really excited about because of over 150 new features. I love Spotlight and Automator I think the most, but the improved iChat looks awesome too along with Dashboard and Safari RSS. But another thing that was really cool was the new displays from Apple. They introduced a brand new line of displays of 20 inches, 23 inches, and the largest high-resolution computer screen ever - the 30 inch. These displays match the Power Mac G5 and the PowerBook. So far, the 30 inch only works with Power Mac G5s if you buy a new graphics card to drive the screen. The displays will be able in July, except for the 30 inch, which will be available in August. I watched (and downloaded) the entire keynote (which was about 1 hour, 40 minutes long). You can find out more information at almost any Apple/Mac community website, but if you want to go straight to the source, go to www.apple.com. Yesterday was a huge leap for Apple and the entire technology world!

SimpleViewer
Found on Boochakanan: the SimpleViewer. It’s a small Flash plugin for viewing images. He did his “portraits” photogallery with it, and I was so taken by its clean look that I decided to dress up my Graceland Cemetery gallery from January. I even added pictures I left out of the original gallery — think of it as the DVD director’s cut. (more…)

System Maintenance. Defragment that swap file.
To improve the efficiency of Windows you can change the size and location of your swap file. Very often you will find yourself using several memory intensive programs at once and you will simply not have enough physical RAM to cope with the strain. It is at this point that Windows creates what is known as a swap file. This is a substitute for physical memory and will contract and expand contingent on how many memory demanding programs you use at once. (more…)

Got Cool New iPod Case
Yesterday, I finally received my cool iSkin eVo iPod case! I got “Sonic” as the color (like aqua blue). It’s really nice, cool, and it gives the iPod a lot more grip. I think I might be selling my old stock iPod case on eBay (or to a friend of mine who got a 15 GB iPod that didn’t come with a case). You can see in the above picture, the front case (which is the one I got and it looks 99% identical to what my real one looks like. Go to www.iskin.com to check it out some more if you are looking for an iPod or iPod Mini case (they cost around $30). (more…)

Excited for the MWSF 2005 Keynote!
As you (hopefully) know, the Macworld San Francisco event has been going on lately and so has the CES. Anyway, tomorrow, Steve Jobs will be giving the MSWF Keynote. There are SO many rumors and predictions as to what will be announced. It is going to be very exciting. Just a couple of the major ones: (more…)
