Ultima Online

When Ultima Online first came out, my brother-in-law [no longer married to the Sis, but still her baby’s daddy so really still my bro-in-law] anyways, we went halves on the game and the monthly subscription. It was so hard to get ahead in the game. Rather than blazing adventures fighting evil monsters and forging alliances with other players I toiled pathetically with my fishing pole. Alone. Trying to catch enough fish to sell to scrape up some money to buy better weapons. I then advanced to killing small wildlife and attempting to sell the fur. It was a sad existence. Many times I would wander into the forest and become dead after meeting with bigger wildlife or monsters. When you are killed in the game you instantly become a ghost, leaving behind your body and possesions and you couldn’t interact with the environment too much besides going to the church to be resurrected. It was amazing how you could seem so isolated while being brutally assaulted by a monster, but as soon as you were killed three dozen players magically appear and loot your sorry corpse of all the measly possesions you fished so hard for. I guess I just wasn’t cut out for that game.
