The Last Samurai

i recently rented The Last Samurai. I don’t want to overstate my reaction to this movie so i’ll just say it really was one of the best movies i’ve ever seen. It was intense, emotional, and - dare i say it - thought provoking. watch it.

We saw Troy in the theatre and it was pretty good. Actually it was very good, but since the main character was essentially a ‘bad guy’ (Achilles played by Brad Pitt) it was hard to really root for him. Plus I kept having visions of my 7th grade history teacher, Mrs.Cross, narrating the movie. Man, was she an angry woman. You’d be angry too, after a lifetime of getting no respect while guarding bridges in fairy tales. I’ll never forget the time that the class clown, Dustin, asked her: “Mrs. Cross, why are you always so cross?” She immediately flew off the handle and instructed him to go to the principal’s office only to have him re-appear in the window opposite the door making funny faces. She had this way of communicating only in a shrill scream when she was pissed and she’d turn beet red. All this in a 4′8″ on a tall day, and 200 pound frame. So, yeah, other than that Troy was good.

Girl With the Pearl Earring. Three words: bored to tears. I thought that if either of us were going to like this movie it would be Julie, because she reads a lot of novels that are based in and around the time period. But the movie just dragged on and on and on and on. It was a war of attrition and the movie beat us both. We won the final battle by turning the damn thing off but our forces were severely depleted. To be fair, I can only say that the first two thirds of the movie sucked eggs and i can only speculate that the rest sucked as bad. Too bad because the acting was actually quite good. The story just moved too damn slow.

Big Fish was really cool. It has the usual Tim Burton wackiness in the best way and has a great storyline. I don’t wan’t to spoil any of the details… you should see it.
