Speed Tweaks

Since the dawn of the 90’s computer time, man has been looking for ways to speed up their computers. Now in the 21st century, computers are becoming even more advanced thus making them more buggier. In this article, I will explain how to tweak Windows right inside the operating system itself!. It’s not as hard as, say, learning Japanese, but it can be a little difficult. Read on.

Change Windows XP Home to Windows XP Pro ??“ Won??™t Work

According to an article posted at Gizmo.com changing 2 bytes from the XP Home install base, are supposed to give the end user XP PRO capabilities.

A computer only understands 0 and 1( bits), but we humans prefer characters.
In Java for example, characters are represented as Unicode (2 bytes == 16 bits).
You could use a byte based stream and store 5 as 101 or a character based stream as 00000000 00110101 which is the character 5 in Unicode. (more…)

.NET in Longhorn

There have been numerous reports in the news media stating that Longhorn will not be built on top of the .net framework. Mary Jo Foley and microsoft-watch even calls it “The Dirty Little Secret” about Longhorn.
It sounds like Fox news on steroids to me, because Microsoft has never intended to bring managed code to kernel mode. (more…)

Syllable Operating Systems

Like Zeta, Syllable wasn’t built independently from the ground up; in July 2002 it was brought to life as a fork of AtheOS, a project largely inspired by BeOS. It is an open source OS designed with simplicity of operation and robustness in mind with a striking focus on aesthetics. While it remains in the early stages of its development, there are already a number of applications available for it, and support for common hardware is apparent. Syllable is designed primarily for the home and small business user, and although it still has a long way to go, it shows great promise.

Where’s my DLL?

How often have you tried to run an application only to be told you’re out of luck because some obscure DLL file is missing from your system? These messages can arise as a result of faulty installations, because you’ve accidentally deleted an essential component yourself or even if the software author has forgotten to include the file altogether. Rather than re-install the troublesome application to resolve the problem, or abandon it completely, you can locate the pesky absentee using one of the following online resource sites: DLL Downloads, DLL Files.

ReactOS Operating Systems

ReactOS is a very ambitious attempt to recreate the Windows NT kernel. When complete, it will provide full support for native Windows applications and drivers. It should be noted that although the aim is to emulate NT 4.0 technology, applications designed for more modern versions of Windows such as Windows 2000 and XP will also be supported as they are assembled upon the same core code. System Maintenance. Defragging your hard drive.

Sitting in front of your monitor while your drives defragment can have a pleasant, calming influence. All your data is magically re-ordered and slotted into its rightful place without you having to lift a finger. This is very relaxing for the first few minutes, but gets a bit tedious when you’re still waiting for Windows Disk Defragmenter to finish the process many hours later. (more…)

SkyOS Operating Systems

The most amazing thing about SkyOS is that it has been coded from scratch, mostly as a one-man project. Its influences are clearly evident though it is not a derivative or fork of any existing operating system. Since its induction in December 1997 development has been swift - it is now clearly one of the more mature really alternative operating systems available today. (more…)

A software uninstaller that uninstalls software… properly.

When considering the uninstallers which come bundled with most applications I like to use the shopping centre escalator analogy. Have you ever noticed that if it’s necessary to go upstairs to enter a shop, or get to the next level of a shop, there will be an escalator to transport you upstairs whereas you have to use ordinary stairs on your descent?
